How far apart should lights be spaced.
How far apart should driveway lights be. August 29 2018 at 359 am. Dependent upon the road type minor residential main A road etc the column heights will be different. Ive lined out dummy posts at 105m spacings and it feels like theres way to many posts.
It depends on the fixtures but 8-10 if you want the lights to touch 10-12 if you want a slight space between the lights. Spacing criterion ceiling height maximum space between each light. Ie can we say that town lights are so many metres apart say between 20 and 35 metres and that urban lights are again so many metres apart.
However if your lights arent very bright you may want to place them closer together. This formula is critical for lighting a space because if the lights are too far apart they will look like spotlights with big shadows. Driveway lighting should be part of your overall landscape lighting design to ensure a cohesive look throughout your property.
If for example your ceiling is 10 feet high you should space your lights 5 feet apart. In addition to the height of the light source appropriate spacing of light fixtures is critical to achieving consistent illumination of streets and sidewalks and to preventing the pedestrian from encountering intervals of darkness. As a general rule smaller profile lighting for residential use should be placed 6 - 8 feet apart while commercial applications that require more lighting should be placed 4 - 6 feet apart.
For the latter the light needs to be close enough to show off the object and focus light on it during the evening and the nighttime hours. A minimum spacing of one-quarter mile two to three blocks should always be maintained. Say between 40 and 50 metres.
5-10 watts of halogen light and 1-3 watts of LED for every 10 feet is fine. As a general rule you should place driveway lights between 10 and 15 feet apart. A little goes a long way.
